Shut bases could get nuclear waste
A $15.5m funding plan allows for reprocessingWASHINGTON -- Closed military bases could become repositories for nuclear waste under a little-noticed section of a spending bill that was passed by the House this week, exacerbating the fears of local lawmakers who are fighting the scheduled closure of four of New England's biggest bases.
The energy and water bill from the House Appropriations Committee includes $15.5 million for reprocessing of nuclear waste from power plants and construction of an interim nuclear waste dump. The legislation does not specify where that dump would be. But the Appropriations Committee report, which explains the bill, suggests that mothballed military bases be considered as potential sites for the waste.
It's interesting how it's assumed that it was "a little-noticed section of a spending bill"
when I bet no one even bothered to read it.
Tens of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars lossed. What's a bit of nuclear waste going to hurt?

By the way, "a little-noticed section of a spending bill"?
I doubt they've even READ the bill.
I just got this email from a cousin who routinely sends pro-Jesus Christ emails. This one particularly made me laugh partly because this was a SERIOUS message.
WASHINGTON - The Army expects to miss its recruiting goals this month and next and is working on a revised sales pitch appealing to the patriotism of parents, Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey said Wednesday. [more]So for how much are our most patriotic moms and dads willing to sell their children to this administration? Maybe sweeten the deal a bit with a discount gas card for the whole family?
BAGHDAD, Iraq - As 55 people died in Iraq on Saturday, the holiest day on the Shiite Muslim religious calendar, Sen. Hillary Clinton said that much of Iraq was "functioning quite well" and that the rash of suicide attacks was a sign that the insurgency was failing.
And either regrets it OR wishes she had some of that protective armor our troops have been requesting.
For those of you who missed it, Ms. Coulter appeared on CNN and debated none other than the "Lion of the Left," KGO's Bernie Ward. I doubt she's listened to his show. If Ann was a guy, I'd say Bernie castrated her. But then again, who knows what's underneath those skirts she wears (I'm keeeeeeeding!).

AND a sample of what the cable audiences are exposed to when intelligent articulate "liberal" voices are given the opportunity to discount right wing nonsense:
About an hour ago, I got the following email from John Kerry (pasted in full below) confirming that he won't be taking part in the formal protest.
Okay, I already knew that he planned to be absent from the process and I respected his decision, but these two paragraphs really rubbed me the wrong way to the point that that "respect" I had prior to my getting his message has dissolved.
"Tomorrow, members of Congress will meet to certify the results of the 2004 presidential election. I will not be taking part in a formal protest of the Ohio Electors.
Despite widespread reports of irregularities, questionable practices by some election officials and instances of lawful voters being denied the right to vote, our legal teams on the ground have found no evidence that would change the outcome of the election."
Let the fence-mending begin. According to a Broadcasting & Cable source in Washington, D.C., CBS News president Andrew Heyward, along with Washington bureau chief Janet Leissner, recently met with White House communications director Dan Bartlett, in part to repair chilly relations with the Bush administration.
the Westboro Baptist Church leaders known for picketing the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the young college student brutally murdered in Wyoming in 1998, have released the following statement regarding the tsunamis which hit Southeast Asia earlier in the week. The statement, which was posted on their website Wednesday alongside dozens of other archived "press releases," thanks God for the tsunami and for the death of any gay Swedish vacationers who perished at the time.[more]
City Councilman Nelson Polite asked baker David Stoltzfus last month to remove the pictures. When Stoltzfus refused, Polite threatened to try to enact a city ordinance that would ban all political material from public places."I just feel that since it was a close election and the city's so divided, that we should have a healing period," Polite told the New Era of Lancaster on Friday.
As much as I'd LOVE to see the picture removed, what right does Polite have to ask much less demand the Baker remove the photo? This is still America. As a democrat, Polite's supposed to be on our side, defending the Constitution. And banning all political material from public places..what the hell was he thinking?
A friend of mine and fellow Natalie Merchant fan wrote this to the tune of Down On Penny's Farm, an American Folk song covered by Merchant in her folk album The House Carpenter's Daughter. Merchant, by the way, has been in a dark state of mind since the election. Like her fellow anti-Bush artists, she's been doing her part to send Bush back to Crawford,Texas, even ticking off some audience members in the process during her last tour when she voiced her (God forbid!) political opinions on stage.
I thoroughly enjoyed my friend's rendition and got his permission, of course, to share it.
You can listen to Merchant's Down on Penny's Farm here.
Down On Bush's Farm
Come here ladies and gentleman
Listen to my song
Bush is on the right
And we all no he's wrong
He may make you angry
He may mean no harm
But It's all about deception
On Bush's farm
It's a hard time in this country
Down on Bush's farm...
USA! USA! USA!
While I take a break from the grandstanding, let me mention that 10 American soldiers have died and 25 wounded (last I've heard). And it appears that Kos was right according to ABC News:
WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2004 -- Although U.S. troops have punched into the center of the Iraqi city of Fallujah, they might later encounter many more insurgents who have escaped, perhaps to fight another day in another place."I personally believe that some of the senior leaders probably have fled," said Army Lt. Gen. Thomas Metz, the multinational ground force commander in Iraq.
Now, can someone please tell me what all that slaughter was for?
